Clarence Thomas Poised to Become the Second-Longest Serving Justice

Clarence Thomas

Clarence Thomas has served as an Associate Justice for more than 34 years since he was sworn in on October 23, 1991. In May, his tenure will surpass those of two  former Justices, moving him into second place in terms of length of service. On May 4, Thomas will overtake Justice Stephen J. Field, who served 12611 days  (5/20/1863-12/1/1897), moving into third place. On May 7, Thomas will overtake John Paul Stevens, who served 12614 days (12/19/1975- 6/29/2010), making Thomas the second-longest serving Justice. If he stays on the Court, Thomas will be the runner-up for that title until May 20, 2028, when he will surpass frontrunner William O. Douglas, who served for 13358 days, or 36 years 209 days (4/17/1939-11/12/1975).
