Civics Education Specialist
Summary
Reports to the Curriculum Development Manager, assists in researching and developing resources for Beyond the Bench. Beyond the Bench is the Society’s civics education website for secondary educators and students. The website houses case summaries, life stories, and other historical content related to the judicial branch and Supreme Court of the United States. Web content resources are developed by historical era and are edited internally and externally. Coordinates and collaborates with other department staff on all Civics Education materials.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Research, compile, draft and publish secondary resources related to Supreme Court history including cases, advocates, and processes.
- Assists with planning and development of content-related professional development for a wide range of educators
- Assist with planning unique curriculum for the Supreme Court and My Hometown, the Society’s nationwide civic education program for high school students
- Conduct research at local government institutions as needed, including the Library of Congress and the National Archives and Records Administration
- Other civics education duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, History, Government or Related Fields
- Minimum 5 years of grade 4-12 social studies classroom teaching experience
- 2-3 years curriculum development experience
- Must be able to pass background check by the Supreme Court of the United States
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters Degree in History, Secondary Social Studies Education, or related fields
- Familiarity with government and law
- District level curriculum development experience
Salary Scale: $70,000-$85,000 annually
Organization Mission
The Supreme Court Historical Society (“Society”) is a not for profit 501(c)(3) membership organization dedicated to preserving and collecting the history of the Supreme Court of the United States, increasing public awareness of the Court’s contribution to our nation’s rich constitutional heritage, and acquiring knowledge covering the history of the entire Judicial Branch. The Society conducts educational programs for students and teachers, and programs of interest to legal practitioners, scholars, historians, and the general public. The Society supports historical research, promotes scholarship, and engages in civic education outreach. It also funds a print and digital publishing program that produces the Journal of Supreme Court History, reference books, documentary history, webcasts, and civic documentaries.
