Joel Richard Paul is the Albert Abramson Professor of Law at the University of California Hastings Law School where he teaches constitutional law. His most recent books are WITHOUT PRECEDENT: CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN MARSHALL AND HIS TIMES (Penguin Random House) and UNLIKELY ALLIES: How a Merchant, a Playwright and a Spy Saved the American Revolution, (Riverhead/Penguin), which was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post. He is currently finishing a book on the rise of American nationalism before the Civil War.
