Fried Frank recently established an award to pay tribute to retired litigation partner and of counsel Robert E. Juceam, and bestowed the first-ever Robert E. Juceam Pro Bono Award upon him in recognition of his exemplary, lifelong commitment to pro bono and public service.
A partner in the Litigation Department for 50 years, Juceam has dedicated much of his career to fighting for vulnerable communities and for systematic reform in multiple substantive areas to ensure fairness for those involved in the legal process. In particular, he has devoted his time to representing noncitizens of limited financial means in immigration benefit applications or in complex removal defense cases in which they would have no right to appointed counsel. Among Juceam’s many immigration pro bono achievements, he secured relief in the US Supreme Court for Haitian refugees seeking asylum who were being held in US government detention camps, and played a key role in the creation of the first national pro bono asylum representation project.
The Robert E. Juceam Pro Bono Award will be presented on an annual basis to an individual at the firm whose dedication to pro bono and public service is reflective of Juceam’s commitment.
“Receiving a Fried Frank pro bono award named after me is an immense honor. This award serves as a reminder that our work extends beyond the courtroom, impacting real lives and communities. I stand on the shoulders of generations of firm lawyers committed to working for the public good. I could not have joined a better firm in which to practice. The award inspires me to continue fighting for greater access to justice and hope it encourages others at the firm to do the same. I am truly grateful for this acknowledgment and the opportunity to inspire a new generation of Fried Frank lawyers to embrace pro bono work.”
